Abstract: Navigation Technology Satellite – 3 (NTS-3) is an advanced satellite navigation flight experiment that will mature next generation technologies across space, ground control, and user equipment segments.Ìý As a unique testbed in geosynchronous orbit, NTS-3 will enable experimentation with multiple integrated advanced technologies and development of new operational concepts. These include a reprogrammable signal generator, an electronically scanned array, flexible and secure signals, increased automation, and use of commercial assets. Technologies matured and knowledge gained from NTS-3 are expected to transition to future generations of GPS constellations.Ìý In August 2019, NTS-3 was designated an U.S. Air Force Vanguard program highlighting the importance of space services and specifically Position, Navigation, and Timing to the U.S. Air & Space Forces.
Bio: Dr. Joanna Hinks has been with the US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) since 2016, working in the Space Vehicles Directorate. She is currently the Principal Investigator for Navigation Technology Satellite – 3, leading a team of about 30 scientists and engineers. Past roles at AFRL include leading the Advanced Navigation Signals team, studying algorithms for timekeeping and clock ensembling, and several other projects related to navigation and timing. Prior to joining AFRL, Dr. Hinks worked as a Research Associate for the State University of New York at Buffalo. She received her MS and PhD from Cornell University, where she worked with Dr. Mark Psiaki on estimation theory and GPS.
