Please join Mark Sirangelo as he welcomes Letitia Long, the first woman to head a major U.S. intelligence agency and one of the country’s foremost experts on U.S. space imagery, practices, strategy and operations, for a discussion of government service, space imagery, today’s global challenges and future career opportunities.Ìý

Letitia Long was appointed as the fifth director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA).Ìý NGA is the lead federal agency for GEOINT, which is the creation and analysis of imagery and geospatial information to describe, assess and visually depict physical features and geographically referenced activities on the Earth.Ìý Anyone who sails a U.S. ship, flies a U.S. aircraft, makes national policy decisions, fights wars, locates targets, responds to natural disasters, or even navigates with a cellphone relies on NGA.Ìý The director of NGA serves as the functional manager for GEOINT, manages a 14,500-person, 100 location Agency and is responsible for a global consortium of more than 400 commercial and government relationships.

Ms. Long has also served as the Deputy Director of Naval Intelligence and as the first Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence.Ìý During her career she was also the Executive Director for Intelligence Community Affairs for the Central Intelligence Agency and held a number of positions at the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), including serving as DIA’s first chief information officer and as its Deputy Director.ÌýÌý

Ms. Long was inducted into the GEOINT Hall of Fame in 2018 and is one of the women who put GEOINT on the map. Her many awards include the Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Civilian Service, Presidential Rank Award of Distinguished Executive, Navy Distinguished Civilian Service Award and the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal.Ìý

She was named one of the Most Powerful Women in the D.C. Metro by Washingtonian magazine, has been honored with a Federal 100 Award and received the Distinguished Intelligence Service Award from the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association.
Ms. Long earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Catholic University of America.Ìý She was awarded with an honorary Doctorate of Strategic Intelligence in 2014 by the National Intelligence University.

He is a former Chairman of the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Innovation Board and the DoD’s Space Advisory Committee. Mark was the founding executive and head of Sierra Nevada Corporation’s Space Systems and has served as the Chief Innovation Officer of Colorado.
