Seminar: Aircraft Design, Aircraft Constraint Diagram - Nov. 27

Abstract: The lecture will focus on the introduction of the aircraft constraint diagram, which is an essential part of the initial aircraft sizing. Coming to the class, the student would have their initial aircraft mission profile and payload/takeoff weight estimation done. The class will cover the six basic constraint equations for the initial aircraft wing and engine sizing.

All constraint equations will be derived from the fundamental aircraft performance examples. The sensitivity of each component of the equation will be discussed during class to emphasize the relationship between the desired aircraft performance and the overall layout and sizing of the aircraft.

Students are expected to:

  1. Perform constraint analysis to determine if the aircraft can meet all said initial requirements;
  2. Identify the design point (thrust loading and wing loading) of the aircraft and
  3. Perform sensitivity analysis in the constraint diagram and understand the effect of each constraint on their initial aircraft sizing.

Bio: Jielong (Jacky) Cai earned his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Shanghai Normal University in 2017. He continued his study at the University of Dayton and earned his Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Aerospace Engineering. His research focuses on propeller aerodynamics and advanced air mobility aircraft aerodynamics.

He has been working as the senior student lab technician in the UD-Low Speed Wind Tunnel Lab and UD Merlin Flight Simulator lab since 2017. He also works as a lecturer and has taught classes including EGR-103 Engineering Innovation and MEE-431 Senior Capstone Design at UD since 2020. He also serves as the president of the UD-AIAA student branch and the advisor for the UD-Aero Design Built and Flight Team.
