Cali M. Banks
Interdisciplinary Media Arts Practices
Cali M. Banks explores the reclamation of identity through performative photography and videography. She examines the complexities of the female body and experience through photography, videography, performance, and new media. This duly explores the ideas of public versus private narratives, which act as a catalyst for discourse addressing the familial and the feminine. Being interested in constructing intimate experiences, Banks creates immersive multimedia installations, photographic prints, and performances.
Born in Syracuse, New York, Banks is an interdisciplinary artist who holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art and Technology and Global Health Studies from Allegheny College. She is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Media Arts Practices at the University of Colorado Boulder.
You Are Prettier When You Smile, 2021
Video and Sound Installation
How do you feel, standing in my shoes?
Can you relate, too?
You are prettier when you smile; he whispers in your ear.
You are prettier when you smile; they demand.
You are prettier when you smile, but you are stronger when you speak.
An exploration of the invisibility of trauma and chronic illness.
