Dance project: Asian / LOVE
I am thrilled to invite you all to a work-progress sharing of Asian / LOVE, a new dance project by guest artists Makisig Akin and Ryuta Iwashita on Friday October 28 10:10-11:40am in the Charlotte York Irey Studio Theatre (w150) in the Theatre and Dance Building. This will be a generous and generative process-oriented sharing of their research. The sharing will be followed by a community conversation. Please feel free to invite interested colleagues/students!
91ÖÆƬ³§ Asian / LOVE:
In response to the increase in Asian hate crimes, Asian / LOVE is new dance duet that follows the storyline of two artists of Asian descent, one from the Philippines and the other from Japan. It researches identity, displacement, and belonging through highlighting the parallels between human migration and fish migration. What might we learn from fish migration about how we can accept others and celebrate our differences? The work includes ancestral practices of grief work, celebration, storytelling, and the gifts of acceptance through an intimate queer journey of dance, song-ness, and connection.
91ÖÆƬ³§ the CU Dance Program Radical Reimagining Series:
The theme for this year’s Radical Reimagining Series, marking our 3rd year, is Actioning Community Through Practice. How can we create a community that is thriving? How can we access anti-racist work while also experiencing moments of joy? The intent for our continued work is to engage in the physical building of a greater sense of community by centering opportunities to get to know one another better while also collectively sharing experiences (including attending events such as performances, movie screenings, and panel discussions) that can spark new conversations for us. At the heart of this year’s Radical Reimagining Series is leaning into the present – a space where we can inform the immediate future and beyond. As part of collaboration, we encourage current students to share forward anti-racist learning with new students to keep fostering our collective capacity.
