The Nitartha Institute for higher Buddhist studies invites you to join us for a unique dharma experience this July at our annual . This is a month-long program that is held over the course of three 9-day sessions. You can join us for one, two or all three sessions.
The Union of Mahamudra Meditation and Study
The Summer Institute skillfully unites and : Mahamudra meditation takes on new meaning when you discover some of its philosophical underpinnings through studying Nitartha’s curriculum courses, and the teachings settle and take hold in our minds when we sit in Mahamudra meditation.
Renowned Faculty
This year’s Summer Institute will be led by renowned Mahamudra master Acharya Lama Tenpa Gyaltsen, along with all of Nitartha’s highly skilled and experienced western faculty. Nitartha’s teachers unpack the dharma texts and bring them to life, showing how these teachings help us understand our minds. ()
Mahamudra Meditation
- The Summer Institute is a perfect opportunity to begin your Mahamudra practice. If you have never received Mahamudra instructions, join us on site at the University of Colorado and enjoy Mahamudra shamatha instructions and practice (Sessions 1 and 2).
- If you have prior Mahamudra experience, you can apply to participate in Mahamudra shamatha or Mahamudra vipashyana instruction and practice, on site or online (Sessions 1 and 2, some prerequisites apply).
- Enjoy a rare opportunity to spend 9 days in a silent Mahamudra retreat with Acharya Lama Tenpa Gyaltsen (during Session 3).
Study Courses
- Acharya Lama Tenpa will give 18 talks on the . This text extracts the essence of the vast tradition of Yogacara scholarship and serves as a key link between the sutra tradition and Mahamudra practice.
- Five of Nitartha’s shedra (study) curriculum courses will be taught during this program:
- Mind and Its World courses I and II
- Madhyamaka
- Yogacara
- Buddha Nature

The Nitartha Institute for higher Buddhist studies was founded in 1996 by Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, under the guidance of Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche and Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche. Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche and Acharya Lama Tenpa Gyaltsen, two world renown Buddhist teachers, share the primary leadership and teaching responsibilities at Nitartha, including curriculum design and teaching the principal Buddhist courses at the Summer Institute.
