2018 Research and Innovation Week events at CEAS

Tours, faculty presentations and giveaways are just a few of the activities the College of Engineering and Applied Science has planned for Research and Innovation Week on campus.

Research and Innovation Week will be held Oct. 15-19 and is hosted by the Research and Innovation Office. The goal is to showcase and demonstrate the broad impact of CU Boulder research, scholarship and creative works. This is the first year of the event.

Here are selected events engineering faculty, students and staff might enjoy throughout the week:

Undergraduate research information booth

When: 8 a.m. – Noon, Tuesday, Oct. 16
Where: Engineering Center Lobby
91��Ƭ��: The CU Engineering Research Support Office is hosting a booth titled Cultivating the New Generation of Engineering Discovery: Undergraduate Research as an informational way to cultivate excitement for undergraduate research. Staff and students will be present to answer questions about their experience and distribute information on how to get involved in research. Students can also win a prize and enjoy a snack. No registration is required, just show up as your schedule allows!

Tour the BioFrontiers Institute

When: 10:30 – 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 16
Where: Jennie Smoly Caruthers BioTech Building, 3415 Colorado Ave.
91��Ƭ��: The CU BioFrontiers Institute is an interdisciplinary hub for bioscience research and education with a focus on improving human health. Scientists at BioFrontiers are deeply committed to unraveling the complexities of biology through integrating many disciplines, including biology, biochemistry, computer science, chemistry, physics and engineering.

Ted-Style Faculty Fellows Talks

When: 5:30 – 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 17
Where: Gordon Gamm Theater, Dairy Arts Center, 2590 Walnut St.
91��Ƭ��: Engineering faculty member Greg Rieker is The group includes some of CU Boulder’s most influential leaders, representing disciplines across the spectrum. Registration is required.

Tour the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP)

When: 10-11 a.m. or 1-2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 18
Where: Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP), 1234 Innovation Drive.
91��Ƭ��: Hanging from the ceiling in the lobby is an Aerobee 150 sounding rocket along with many other interesting spacecraft and historical objects. Visitors can also view models of different spacecraft and satellites, several class-10,000 clean rooms, a machine shop for building instruments and a Mission Operations Center that operates satellites.

Research Blitz: Innovations in Security and Resilience

When: 3-5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18
Where: Ice Rink Overlook (Student Recreation Center)
91��Ƭ��: This event is designed to help CU Boulder's research community identify opportunities for new collaborations with fellow faculty and industry partners. Researchers will present their security-related work in a series of three-minute lightning-round sessions. Topics range from remote sensing and Earth analytics to cybersecurity and human factors. A networking reception will follow. Engineering faculty, researchers and staff giving presentations include, Tom Berger, Eric Frew, Marco Nicotra, Keith Porter, Chris Heckman and Sriram Sankaranarayanan.

ATLAS Research Showcase

When: 3:30- 5:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 19
Where: Roser ATLAS Center, 1125 18th St.
91��Ƭ��: ATLAS faculty members and students have diverse research interests that span computing, art, learning, chemistry, design, robotics, music and more. Tour the facility, meet with faculty and hear about new research initiatives. This free event is open to the public with no registration required.

Other events

Other planned events connected to engineering include tours of the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute at the Sustainability, Energy and Environment Community building on East Campus and a Quantum Interactive Seminar with Carl J. Williams of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Details for both events will be announced soon.
