EVEN Prof. Linden, Ren and Rosario-Ortiz Sabbaticals

is currently on sabbatical for the calendar year 2016.  His sabbatical covers travel to four different regions of the world to collaborate on research in the areas of public health protection and novel technologies for water treatment and reuse.  At the University of British Columbia (Vancouver BC; Jan-Feb 2016) he was an International Visiting Research Scholar through the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies to work with colleagues developing novel solutions to small water treatment systems, focusing on Canadian First Nations communities. At the University of Tokyo, Japan (Mar – Apr 2016) he was a fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science collaborating in the area of water disinfection and development of novel LED-based water treatment systems. At Tel Aviv University, Israel (Jun – Jul 2016) he is a Nirit and Michael Shauol Fellow in the area of water security, including water reclamation and reuse and innovative treatment technologies, specific to the Middle East region. At the Technical University of Munich, Germany (Aug – Dec 2016) he will be the August-Wilhelm Scheer Visiting Professor in the area of Urban Water Systems Engineering working with TUM researchers on full scale evaluation of novel treatment technologies. These sabbatical experiences will support continued growth in teaching and research activities and open up new foci of collaboration for Linden’s research group and the Engineering in Developing Communities area.


Zhiyong Jason Ren is on sabbatical at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, CO from Fall 2015 to Spring 2016. He is a visiting professor in the National Bioenergy Center. He is working with NREL scientists to develop novel microbial and electrochemical technologies to produce renewable energy and reduce carbon emission. Current projects include microbial electrochemical carbon capture and energy production from biomss waste and wastewater, biological hydrogen production and storage, and novel materials for bioelectrochemical energy conversion. He also bridges CU student internship opportunities at NREL. He worked with several federal agencies and Chaired a workshop on developing a National Test Bed Network for Energy Positive Resource Recovery Facilities. 


is currently on sabbatical at the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (EAWAG) located in Dubendorf in Switzerland. He is a visiting scientist at the Department of Water Resources and Drinking Water. At EAWAG, Dr. Rosario is working on a project examining the effects of ozone treatment on the photochemical reactivity of wastewater derived effluent organic matter (EfOM), specifically looking at both the photosensitizing and inhibitory aspects of EfOM photochemistry. Dr. Rosario is also a visiting professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. There, he is visiting the Department of Environmental Systems Sciences, working with the Environmental Chemistry group. At ETH, Dr. Rosario is working on a project examining the optical properties of organic matter specifically the role of charge transfer interactions on the observed photochemical and photo physical properties of the material. Dr. Rosario will be back from sabbatical in July 2016.
