Job Opening: Soil: Waste Treatment Adviser

SOIL (Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods) is working in Haiti to transform waste into useful resources since 2006. Their mission is to support dignity, health and sustainable social work in transforming waste into significant resources for the nature. SOIL is seeking advisory support for our composting program to provide strategic guidance and promote ongoing research collaborations. The advisor will play the role of providing key support to the Composting Managers and acting as a liaison between external researchers and the SOIL operational team to push forward innovations and improve operational efficiency. They are looking for someone with a passion for environmental protection and increasing access to sanitation who is ready to put their knowledge to work in the field. This position is critical to SOIL鈥檚 long-term vision of increasing access to affordable, dignified sanitation services and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities in Haiti.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as project lead for internal research projects related to waste treatment and transformation.
  • Act as a liaison between external researchers and SOIL staff on all research projects related to waste treatment and transformation.
  • Share research results with relevant SOIL staff.
  • Analyze waste treatment-related data in order to facilitate progress on SOIL鈥檚 strategic goals.
  • Develop the capacity of Waste Treatment staff for data analysis.
  • Research and share lessons learned with SOIL staff regarding similar projects around the world, including relevant business case studies and similar waste-to-resource operations.
  • Provide engineering and design advice at SOIL鈥檚 composting sites.
  • Coordinate between the Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien offices to improve information-sharing and to promote streamlined best practices between offices in cooperation with Senior Managers, Waste Treatment Managers, and the Director of Research and Innovation.
  • Share challenges, new ideas and other relevant information with the Director of Research and Innovation.
  • Review waste treatment data in the Results Tracker each month.
  • Submit a monthly report to Director of Research and Innovation.
  • Improve laboratory capacities for testing pathogens, nutrients, and other parameters during the composting process and on the end product.
  • Research the market for soil lab services in Northern Haiti and develop a strategy to increase lab revenues.
  • Analyze and improve SOIL鈥檚 current data management systems for compost monitoring (including quantities, pathogen elimination, quality etc.).
  • Work with the operational teams and external stakeholders to update the Sanitation Safety Plan on a yearly basis to account for operational changes.
  • Represent SOIL at conferences and external trainings upon request.             
  • Other tasks as requested and mutually agreed upon.

Required Qualifications:

  • Respect for co-workers
  • Readiness to work in a supportive and collaborative capacity
  • Knowledge of composting, black soldier fly larvae production, and/or other waste-to-resource technology
  • Strong research and data analysis skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once
  • Fluency in English
  • Competency Haitian Creole (the primary language used within the organization) or ability and willingness to achieve competency rapidly

Additional Experience:

  • Engineering design
  • Living/working in Haiti or other impoverished contexts
  • Producing drawings in AutoCAD or SketchUp
  • Laboratory analysis and familiarity with basic lab protocols
  • Preparing and managing budgets
  • Fluency in French
