Job Description

Volunteers are an important part of our HealthBuffs program. Whether you are interested in a way to get involved or learn more about health and wellness, Health Promotion has a wide range of one-time and ongoing volunteer opportunities that can help you make an impact on your campus community. Come help us staff an event, support outreach and event promotion, get involved in special projects, distribute health resources, and more.

  • Receive volunteer hours, signed off by a Health Promotion staff member.
  • Develop highly sought-after skills transferable to the workforce regardless of major such as team work, leadership, communication, event management, project management, and public speaking.
  • Receive training and professional development opportunities in a variety of health-related topics.
  • Gain experience in the field of health and wellness and contribute to the betterment of the health and wellness of the CU Boulder community.
  • Engage in networking opportunities with peers and professional staff and become a part of a group that is committed and passionate about Health and Wellness on campus.
  • Collaborate with HealthBuff Peer Educators and Peer Wellness Coaches, gaining exposure to these positions and future job opportunities.
  • Receive various forms of recognition and credentialing depending on the level of service and contribution.
  • Expand your knowledge, become a leader on campus, and gain experience in the field of public health through health promotion, education, and prevention.
  • Current CU Boulder Student Interest in public health, health promotion, or health and wellness

  • No previous experience is required Attend a volunteer orientation/training in mid-September.
  • Dates and times of the training will be made available in August
  • Attendance at a monthly Monday meeting (5:00-6:30 pm) during the academic year.
  • At these meetings, you will meet with other team members and receive up-to-date training and information on upcoming volunteer opportunities.

Job Description

HealthBuffs peer educators enhance the health of CU Boulder students through a variety of peer-led initiatives in the areas of stress, sleep, sexual health, relationship wellness, self-image, alcohol and other drugs, nicotine cessation, suicide prevention and more. The HealthBuffs peer education program also promotes student leadership by providing essential health and wellness services to campus student groups and organizations.

HealthBuffs peer educators provide health and wellness education to their peers through interactive programs, tabling, and planning outreach events. HealthBuffs peer educators are expected to participate in weekly staff meetings (Mondays, 5 to 6:30 p.m.) and other content-focused training opportunities. HealthBuffs peer educators work collaboratively with one another to help support the entire program from front desk needs to outreach.

Peer educators work closely with Health Promotion staff to initiate and plan programs such as:

  • Outreach and events for high-risk times and awareness events, including Welcome Week, Overdose Awareness Day, College Alcohol Awareness Month, Halloween, St. Patrick’s Day, finals and graduation
  • Lead requested harm reduction and skill building programs in the residence halls and colleges
  • Weekly outreach programs: Mindful Mondays, Health Huts, Wellness Wednesdays and Fri-Yay
  • Learn and deliver skill-building and psycho-educational workshops and presentations

Personal Skills

  • Interest in public health, health promotion, or health and wellness
  • Commitment to inclusivity and multiculturalism
  • Strong interpersonal communication and time management skills
  • Highly organized, dependable, and accountable

Operational Skills

  • Experience in customer service, leadership, outreach, presentation or facilitation
  • Knowledge and familiarity with campus organizations and resources
  • Previous volunteer and/or peer education experience helpful but not required
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Other Requirements

  • A full-time degree seeking CU student
  • Have and maintain a 2.5 or higher grade point average (GPA)
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends
  • Complete mandatory trainings, including the NASPA Certified Peer Educator Training in mid-August
  • Attendance at weekly Monday night meetings from 5 - 6:30 p.m. during the academic year

Compensation: Starting at $14/hour.

Job Description

Health Promotion is recruiting HealthBuffs peer wellness coaches for the 2021-2022 school year. A peer wellness coach (PWC) promotes greater student well-being by working with their peers to increase awareness of wellness resources on campus, provide support, and encourage responsible decision-making. Peer wellness coaches support students in realizing their own wellness goals through a positive, strengths-focused approach. Typical coaching topics include physical and emotional well-being, goal setting, stress reduction, time management, etc.

  • Respond to requests from the residential communities, student organizations and other campus partners to participate in activities promoting wellness coaching and student health and wellness

  • Prior experience should include skills in customer service, outreach, coaching, mentoring, leadership or volunteer and/or student organization work.
  • A current degree seeking CU student enrolled in six or more credits
  • Have and maintain a 2.5 or higher grade point average (GPA)
  • Ability to commit to the peer wellness coaching position for one academic year
  • Strong interest in enhancing student health and wellness
  • Highly organized, dependable, and reliable
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with students, student employees, and professional staff
  • Willingness to discuss sensitive topics
  • PWCs should expect between 15 - 20 hours of work each week
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate time in training, supervision, outreach and coaching sessions
  • Staff outreach events related to peer wellness coaching
  • Commitment to working some evenings and weekends
  • Completion of the NASPA Certified Peer Educator Training
