Professor Kira Hall (CU-Boulder Linguistics), Professor Donna M. Goldstein (CU-Boulder听Anthropology), and Matthew Bruce Ingram (Ph.D. student,听UT-Austin) recently published an article titled听鈥淭he Hands of Donald Trump: Entertainment, gesture, spectacle,鈥� in the October issue of听HAU Journal of Ethnographic Theory.听Their听findings were also highlighted in Colorado Arts and Sciences Magazine:听听
This detailed study听attributes听the success of Trump鈥檚 candidacy in the 2016 Republican primary to its value as comedic entertainment, as seen in the way Trump uses gesture to critique the political system and caricature his opponents.听Indeed, in the听Colorado Arts and Sciences Magazine听article,听Professor Goldstein states that听鈥�...his use of a kind of 鈥榮tandup鈥� comedy format suspends (his audiences) from the usual stiff, staid political oratory."听Professor Hall adds that听鈥渢he density of his use of comedic entertainment is unprecedented in politics鈥�.听
