How Student Affairs can support your student
Students have access to support, programs and services to enhance their college experience through the Division of Student Affairs. The 20 departments within Student Affairs aim to help students become successful, curious and competent individuals during their time here.
Your student can benefit from the many resources offered based on their needs and interests. New Student & Family Programs works with students and their families to connect you to information and resources to help support your student.
Living at CU Boulder
Most first-year students live on campus in the residence halls. Residence Life offers a range of services and programs to help students feel at home, make new friends, succeed academically and gain a sense of belonging. Students living on campus and all first-year students can receive free peer tutoring through the Academic Success and Achievement Program (ASAP).
Whether your student lives on or off campus, they have a variety of healthy, nutritious and convenient options to eat with Campus Dining Services. On-campus dining options include dining centers, retail markets, restaurants, cafes and grab-n-gos. University Housing manages many of the processes in the residence halls, including services and amenities for students living on campus.
After their first year, many students move off campus to rental properties in Boulder. To help navigate this transition, students can connect with Off-Campus Housing and Neighborhood Relations to learn about all aspects of living off campus. This includes the housing search, getting free lease reviews, navigating roommate disagreements and understanding Boulder ordinances.
Involvement and connection
Students who get involved and develop a sense of belonging at CU Boulder experience positive outcomes, including improved academic performance and higher graduation rates. In Student Affairs, there are many ways for students to meet fellow Buffs while exploring interests and hobbies outside the classroom. The Center for Student Involvement promotes involvement opportunities through student organizations, events and programs. Fraternity & Sorority Life also offers opportunities for connection with nearly 30 chapters officially affiliated with the university.
Known as “the campus living room,” the University Memorial Center sits in the heart of campus, where students can find several dining options, the CU Book Store, The Connection and many other resources and offices. This location is a great place to study, hang out with friends and relax between classes.
Another option for students to get involved, explore interests and fill free time is through Recreation Services. They have various fitness classes, intramural sports and instruction classes where students can be active and meet people. They also host adventure trips and equipment rentals to make it easy for students to explore the great outdoors and enjoy life in Colorado.
Professional and leadership development
A common goal for many students is to find a full-time job after graduation, and Student Affairs has many resources to help students achieve this goal. Students have opportunities to prepare for life after college by building leadership experience and learning about the internship and job search process. Career Services supports students throughout their time at CU Boulder with workshops, training, events and one-on-one career guidance.
Students can participate in CU Student Government, join leadership programs or participate in student boards and committees to gain leadership experience and influence life at CU Boulder. Working on campus is another great way to develop leadership skills and meet people while earning money. Student Affairs departments employ hundreds of students.
Community and civic engagement
Part of a successful college experience is learning to be a part of the community. The Volunteer Resource Center provides opportunities for students to give back through volunteering. Students can choose from one-time options, ongoing commitments and volunteer trips. Volunteering offers a way for students to learn skills, gain experience, meet people and feel good about their positive contributions.
CU Boulder’s student-led Environmental Center is a proud leader in sustainability. Students can get involved through volunteering, as a student employee or by participating in workshops and events.
Diversity and inclusion
CU Boulder advances diversity, equity and inclusion in all aspects of campus life. Students from different backgrounds and identities can find support, community and connection at
the Center for Inclusion and Social Change. From their offices (Education & Social Change, First-Gen Programs and Enrichment, Intercultural Engagement, ԻPride) to signature events like the Ignite Social Justice Conference, the center connects students to resources, events and programs to learn and cultivate a sense of belonging at CU Boulder.
Student support
The Division of Student Affairs cares about the entire student experience, including when students need extra support. Students can find help tailored to their needs.
It can be challenging for students to succeed academically when their basic needs, like access to food and housing, are not met. The Basic Needs Center is an on-campus collective to connect students facing food or housing insecurity to resources, including the Buff Pantry on-campus food pantry.
The Office of the Dean of Students supports and advocates for students and connects them with resources essential to their ongoing success. Two of those resources include Student Conduct & Conflict Resolution (SCCR) and Student Support & Case Management (SSCM).
SCCR provides support to help students understand the impact of their behaviors and resolve conflict. SCCR also enforces the Honor Code, which ensures that students succeed in a fair and honest way.
SSCM provides individualized support to students to help them address a myriad of needs including, but not limited to:
Mental health concerns.
Family emergencies.
Hospitalization.
Financial concerns
If you are concerned about your student at any point this year, you can refer them to SSCM for help. Referrals can be made by completing the or by contacting SSCM at 303-492-7348 or sscm@colorado.edu.
CU Boulder also has a small on-campus law firm. Student Legal Services provides consultations and education in various legal areas, including criminal, civil and administrative law.
Student veterans and military members receive ongoing support through Veteran and Military Affairs. Students can connect to the resources they need to be successful, including academic advising, math and physics tutoring hours and medical services while finding community with fellow Buff veterans.
