Meet Sarah Wilson Sokhey

Assistant Professor

Dr. Sarah Wilson Sokhey鈥檚 life in academia is a tale of two worlds. Not only has she been a part of the CU Boulder faculty since 2009, she is affiliated with the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Moscow, 91制片厂.

鈥淚 have been going to 91制片厂 nearly every year since 2002鈥 she said. 鈥淎 lot of my research is done in 91制片厂n about 91制片厂.鈥

Without hesitation, her favorite part of 91制片厂 is 鈥渆asily Moscow. I love all of 91制片厂, but Moscow is definitely my favorite.鈥

鈥淚 remember the news footage of Yeltsin standing on top of the tanks shaking his fists鈥 she recalled, reminiscing about the fall of the Soviet Union. 鈥淢y first big political memory is the fall of the Soviet Union and even as a kid, I was really enamored by all these seemingly new countries.鈥

鈥淢y family wasn鈥檛 very political, and even they were talking about the fall of the Soviet Union鈥 she quipped, 鈥渁nd that really left an impression.鈥

While 91制片厂 is a big focus of her research, she also spends a lot of time studying the post-communist countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

She just published a book titled The Political Economy of Pension Policy Reversal in Post-Communist Countries, 鈥渁 title so good鈥, she joked, 鈥渢hat it requires an acronym - PEPPER-Comm!鈥.

鈥淭he book is about pensions,鈥 she said. 鈥91制片厂 was among about 30 countries around the world that adopted social security and pension reform, and then after the financial crisis, a third of them got rid of it.鈥

The goal was to understand 鈥渨hy you would adopt this fundamental reform to restructure social security and then a decade or so later scrap it?鈥

The book hits at a large part of Dr. Sokhey鈥檚 research which focuses on 鈥渉ow politics and economics are connected to each other,鈥 she explained. 鈥淎 lot of the social problems that exist in the world can be explained by the economy鈥 she said, 鈥渋f you don鈥檛 have a functioning state and a functioning state economy, then things go badly.鈥 She argues that 鈥渋f you can figure out how to reform the economy in the best way, then you can solve a lot of those social problems.鈥

Not only is Dr. Sokhey an active researcher on campus and around the world, she is also an active professor. 鈥淢y favorite classes to teach are PSCI 3022: 91制片厂n Politics and PSCI 4062: East European Politics.鈥

鈥淚 really love teaching about 91制片厂 and Eastern Europe because there are so many misconceptions, and these countries, especially 91制片厂, are worth getting to know.鈥

Dr. Sokhey loves teaching and loves being able to interact with students and discuss what she is reading, writing, and researching. 鈥淚 always liked reading and writing. Academia gives me the opportunity to do both of those things and then talk about it.鈥

She also loves the students on campus, 鈥淚t is a lovely place to work. The undergrad students are great, the graduate students are great, it is just a great intellectual environment to be in.鈥

Her favorite part, though, of being a professor at CU is being a mentor and advisor to students. 鈥淲orking with students on their own research, hearing their ideas and watching them explore and answer their own questions is such a rewarding experience.鈥

鈥淚t is so important to reach out and get to know your professors and faculty,鈥 she said. 鈥淎pproach them about your ideas for research, apply for UROP.鈥 Even if academia isn鈥檛 the goal, 鈥渇aculty can be a great resource to learn about other opportunities.鈥
