The award grants $2,000 to the best published article or conference paper produced by a graduate student associated with IBS. They established this fund for two reasons.</p><p><span>First, they wished to say thanks to the Institute of Behavioral Science for helping to make<span>&nbsp;</span><span>Ed</span>’s long scholarly career possible and to help the Institute continue to be a significant support for both established and emerging scholars in interdisciplinary behavioral science. Expect discussion not only of current cases and controversies in First Amendment law and jurisprudence but also of broader free speech issues in their social and political dimensions, including campus issues involving limits on or threats to political speech and academic freedom.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The event will be held in <strong>UMC 382-84-86</strong>&nbsp;on <strong>Wednesday, April 3</strong>, with doors opening at <strong>3 pm</strong>&nbsp;and the presentation starting at <strong>3:15</strong>&nbsp;(ending at 4:45, reserving the last 30 minutes for Q&amp;A and discussion). Refreshments will be available. The event is open to all within the CU community (including alums) with no requirement for prior registration. We are especially focused on widening students’ concepts of what they can do with their social science degrees by connecting them with organizations that depend on civic activities to sustain their operations.</p><p>We define civic engagement as the act of participating in collective efforts to improve the culture and conditions of our world. Our guiding principle with this event is that it can be easy to fall for the trap that contributing to our political world is out of reach and not worth the effort for the average person. Indifference is a coping mechanism for disempowerment.
