We'd like to highlight three of our esteemed faculty members from the Political Science Department that have recently published insightful books, each diving into crucial aspects of the political landscape.

Anand Sokhey writes, The Full Armor of Godexploring the paths of Christianity and nationalism within American politics, examining how religious beliefs shape political mobilization. Meanwhile, Srinivas Parinandi investigates how varying institutional frameworks impact the formulation of renewable energy policies in his book, Following in Footsteps or Marching Alone. Lastly, Andy Phillips newest book entitled, The politics of Budgets : Getting a Piece of the Piedelves into the intricate dynamics of budget allocation, exploring how various interests compete for their share of resources.

The Department of Political Science at CU Boulder is excited to announce that we will be hosting a Civic Engagement Fair for students!

Event details:

February 22nd
10 am - 1 pm
UMC 235

The Civic Engagement Fair is targeted towards social science majors to connect them with opportunities to engage with their civic duties. We are especially focused on widening students’ concepts of what they can do with their social science degrees by connecting them with organizations that depend on civic activities to sustain their operations.

We define civic engagement as the act of participating in collective efforts to improve the culture and conditions of our world. Our guiding principle with this event is that it can be easy to fall for the trap that contributing to our political world is out of reach and not worth the effort for the average person. Indifference is a coping mechanism for disempowerment. Our goal in hosting this fair is to show students the wide array of opportunities to get involved and build community in civic spaces.

The event will be kicked off with presentations from two CU Boulder alumni; Boulder County Commissioner Marta Loachamin (BA Ethnic Studies) and Boulder Couty Clerk and Recorder Molly Fitzpatrick (BA Political Science).

After their presentations, students will get the opportunity to speak with representatives from a variety of on-campus, local, and statewide organizations.

Political Science Professor Sarah Sokhey and former CU undergrad, now a Ph.D. student in Political Science at Pittsburgh, Jeffrey Nonnemacher newest article about the STUDIO Undergraduate Research Lab has recently been published in PS.

Abstract:

Undergraduate research labs have long been recognized as having educational and professional benefits, but much less attention has been given to how they can promote diversity and inclusion. Without a conscientious effort to promote these goals, labs are likely to replicate and perpetuate existing inequalities. This article discusses our experiences and lessons from launching an undergraduate research lab in a political science department at a research-oriented state university. It concludes with suggestions for other departments interested in starting undergraduate research labs. Promoting diversity and inclusion by working with undergraduates is unlikely if faculty are recruiting students individually outside of a lab, if the burden is on students to approach faculty, or if labs do not take practical steps to make this happen.

The CU Conference on World Affairs (CWA), is a campus event that takes place April 6-9, 2022. This is the CWA’s 74^th year, and it brings renowned speakers to campus from all over the world in every imaginable field of endeavor from the arts to business to technology to politics. In recent years the CWA has hosted President Joe Biden, poet Amanda Gorman, athlete Hope Solo, co-founder of Apple Steve Wozniak, gymnast Aly Raisman, immigrant rights activist Jose Antonio Varga, and co-creator of The Simpsons Mike Reiss, just to name a few of our invited guests.

Students play a central role in planning and implementing the CWA from recruiting speakers to planning sessions to driving speakers from the airport. We also pair speakers with students for mentoring and career advice and development.

If you are interested in learning more about CWA and how you might get involved, you are invited to a welcome event next Wednesday August 25 from 5:00-7:00 p.m at the Koenig Alumni House on campus. It will be an informal social gathering with free food, so feel free to stop by for any portion of that window. To RSVP for the open house, follow this link, so they know how much food to purchase.

The Judicial Branch is an incredible way for us as undergrads to use logical reasoning and analysis, both skills that are very useful for law school and beyond. In the Court, Justices have the ability to hold Court hearings, write opinions, review governing documents, and much more. It truly is an amazing opportunity. FOR UNDERGRADS: Students can now apply for the STUDIO research lab for fall 2021. A flyer is attached, and the application is due Tuesday, June 1st for students to start participating in fall 2021. Students with federal work study awards are encouraged to apply (but work study is not required). No prior research experience is necessary.

FOR FACULTY & ADVANCED PHD STUDENTS: We're looking for proposals from faculty & Ph.D. students (at the dissertation stage) who are conducting research on diversity, equity, or inclusion and would like to work with undergrad research assistants at no cost to them. STUDIO is run in the political science department and we are specifically looking for some proposals outside of the political science department that address diversity, equity, or inclusion.
