Jaroslav Tir, a member of the Political Science Department here at CU Boulder, explores why multi ethnic countries, that once lived in harmony like Yugoslavia, devolve into violent ethnic conflicts. His research, co authored with Shane Singh focuses on how not just the content, but the language used by governing authorities to communicate about how ethnic minorities can exacerbate tensions and lead to dehumanization.

Marayna Martinez- studying American politics with a focus on education policy. Her research and teaching interests include race and ethnic politics, political behavior, policy feedback, and K12 education policy. IShe is particularly interested in the feedback effects of public education on the political development of children of color.

Michelangelo Landgrave- He holds graduate degrees in Political Science and Economics. He has previously held positions at Princeton University, the Federal Government's Office of Evaluation Sciences, and the University of Missouri. He broadly studies immigration politics, state & local politics, and legislative studies. He organizes the Boulder Race & Ethnic Politics (REP) Lab.

Alexandra Palmer- She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Colorado, Boulder and her research interests focus on judicial politics.. Political Science emeritus Ed Greenberg, with the assistance of his sons Joshua and Nathaniel, have established the Institute of Behavioral Science's first annual scholarship. The award grants $2,000 to the best published article or conference paper produced by a graduate student associated with IBS. They established this fund for two reasons.

First, they wished to say thanks to the Institute of Behavioral Science for helping to make Ed’s long scholarly career possible and to help the Institute continue to be a significant support for both established and emerging scholars in interdisciplinary behavioral science. While at the Institute, and with the support of IBS staff and faculty, and several major grants from the National Science Foundation and the NIH, Ed produced many books and refereed articles on democratic theory and practice in the polity and in the workplace and how these practices impacted institutions, organizations, and individual well-being.

Second, Ed and his sons Joshua and Nathaniel, wished to honor the memory of Martha who was not only a wonderful wife and mother, and a friend to many, but an important figure in the cultural life of the Boulder-Denver area, first as the co-founder of Boulder Dance Odyssey, a modern dance company and school, and then as a leading actor appearing in over twenty plays for a variety of companies in the metro area and the two-time winner of the Best Actress in a Play from the Denver Drama Critics Circle. A Boulder Women’s organization designated Martha as a “Spunky Woman” for accomplishing all that that she done while battling the late effects of bulbar polio which she had as a child.

Greetings,

The Keller Center has organized an upcoming presentation and discussion of potential interest to PSCI students, faculty and staff. Mike McDevitt (from CU Journalism) and Scott Skinner-Thompson (CU Law) will present the first of a planned semesterly series of "State of the First Amendment" events on the five 1A freedoms, starting with free speech. Expect discussion not only of current cases and controversies in First Amendment law and jurisprudence but also of broader free speech issues in their social and political dimensions, including campus issues involving limits on or threats to political speech and academic freedom.

The event will be held in UMC 382-84-86 on Wednesday, April 3, with doors opening at 3 pm and the presentation starting at 3:15 (ending at 4:45, reserving the last 30 minutes for Q&A and discussion). Refreshments will be available. The event is open to all within the CU community (including alums) with no requirement for prior registration.
