After 15 years with CU Boulder, CurtĚýHuetsonĚýis retiring as director of facilities, planning, operations and project management for Housing and Dining Services.ĚýAmong Huetson’s many accomplishments, he has been a champion of sustainability improvements.Ěý
This spring, he received a Campus Sustainability Award. Huetson, in his award description, is described as having led one of the campus’s sustainability action teams, launched nearly 10 years ago, four years past when the others had dismantled—a sign of his dedication. His action team focused on zero waste.
His nomination stated, “the zero waste team is active to this day because of Curt’s passion for sustainability and his drive to understand campuswide efforts relating to efficiency and resource reduction.”
In his waste-diversion and program-efficiency work, Huetson engaged the departments of human resources, Environmental Health and Safety, Distribution Services and Procurement Services to encourage the development of many initiatives through ongoing dialogue and coordination.
Initiatives have included: paperless testing (e-exams) for large departments; expansion of battery and ink cartridge recycling; expansion of furniture recycling programs; recycling of dry and wet plastic film/bags; reduced cost for compostable bags through coordinated bulk purchasing; expanded recycling/composting of “hard to recycle materials” including lab glass, plastic films and animal bedding; and increased awareness and utilization of paperless systems like Docusign.
Housing and Dining Services will host a retirement party for Huetson from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8, in the Kittredge Multipurpose Rooms B, C and D. The campus community is invited to join in recognizingĚýCurt’s contributions to the campus.
