These last few weeks have been stressful and unsettling for many of us in our campus community. In response to COVID-19, our normal routines have been disrupted, and we may be feeling uncertain of how this will continue to unfold. During times like these, it’s more important than ever that we act with respect, integrity and compassion toward each other.
While classes are now being held remotely, the academic rigor of your semester remains the same, and the Student Code of Conduct still applies as we finish the academic year. Disregard for our campus spaces and the health and safety of our community is not acceptable.Ìý
Unacceptable student behavior
Vandalism in the residence halls and large parties on The Hill this past weekend are not reflective of what it means to be a Buff. The residence halls are still home to many students and will continue to be home for the rest of the semester. Whether you choose to remain living on campus or choose to move out, please continue to respect the buildings and homes of your fellow students. Large parties on The Hill have a significant impact on the community and go against the efforts we’re all making to socially distance ourselves to prevent the spread of this illness.Ìý
All students are still held to the Student Code of Conduct and are subject to the conduct process and university sanctions (housing contract termination, suspension, expulsion, etc.) if it is violated. There are also fines associated with property damage in addition to possible criminal charges.ÌýÌý
Being mindful of our actions
We understand that many of our fellow Buffs are feeling anxious right now. Some students are worried about finishing classes remotely and adjusting to online learning. Others are feeling concerned for loved ones as we make an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. Some may be upset about canceled trips or events they’ve looked forward to. Because of this, it’s important to be mindful of our actions. Our actions often have an effect on those around us, whether we realize it or not. You never know what someone else is going through and the effect your actions may have on them.Ìý
Looking out for yourselves and each other
As we finish out the spring semester, I encourage you all to take care of yourselves and take care of each other. Find productive ways to relieve stress–engage in physical activity, stay connected with friends and family virtually, practice self-care and seek support if you need it. If you see something concerning, or notice that the health and safety of a fellow Buff is at risk, don’t hesitate to call for help. Know how you can be an effective bystander and look out for other members of your community.
We will get through this together. Please be mindful, respectful and kind, and remember, you are a Buff wherever you are.ÌýÌý
