One Health Symposium

Date: Friday, April 25, 2025

Location: SEEC Auditorium (C120), CU Boulder East Campus

The CU Boulder One Health Symposium aims to bring together researchers, faculty, students, and professionals from multiple disciplines to discuss the interconnected health of humans, animals, and the environment. The concept of One Health recognizes that human health is closely linked to the health of animals and our shared ecosystems, especially in light of contemporary environmental challenges, such as climate change, pandemics, biodiversity loss, and agricultural impacts on water systems. This symposium will provide a platform for interdisciplinary exchange, where cutting-edge research and innovations at the intersection of health and the environment can be shared and explored. Topics will include zoonotic disease transmission, the impacts of agricultural runoff, environmental pollution, and sustainable solutions to safeguard public health.

Objectives

  • Raise awareness of the One Health approach among CU Boulder departments.
  • Foster interdisciplinary collaboration on research related to health, agriculture, environmental engineering, and public health.
  • Present innovative research on topics such as microbial contamination from agricultural runoff, zoonotic diseases, and ecosystem health.
  • Create opportunities for students and early-career researchers to present posters and interact with leading experts in the field.

Symposium Format

  • Keynote Speaker: A leading expert in the field of One Health will open the symposium with a presentation on emerging trends and the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in tackling global health challenges.
  • Panel Presentations/Discussions: Faculty and researchers from (but not limited to) Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering, Ecology, Biology, and Public Health departments will share insights from their ongoing research on topics such as:
    • Microbial contamination in water systems.
    • Zoonotic diseases and their transmission pathways.
    • The effects of climate change on human, animal, and environmental health.
  • Poster Sessions: Undergraduate and/or graduate students will showcase their research projects related to One Health. Posters will provide an opportunity for interactive discussion and networking. Poster dimensions will be given with accepted abstracts.
  • A detailed meeting program will be made available closer to the date.

Abstract Submissions

  • Abstract submission deadline: March 1st, 2025
