The SURCO program in Oaxaca proved to be a life-changing experience. Immersing myself in the culture while honing my Spanish language skills was invaluable. We had the opportunity to explore Oaxaca's diverse landscapes, from the cloud forests of the Sierra Madres to the beaches of the Pacific coast and the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, which unveiled a state rich in history and natural beauty. The juxtaposition of ancient traditions and Spanish colonial influence created a unique cultural tapestry. The gastronomy of Oaxaca was unlike anything I've ever experienced. I had the privilege of trying a traditional Mixtec salsa called Chicatana salsa, composed of chicatana ants. I ate chapolines which are grasshoppers and I also had the privilege of trying several different types of mole. We explored many museums and ancient ruins as well as Spanish churches that are very prevalent. I tried to immerse myself in the local culture as much as possible, we did a woodcarving workshop and explored many festivals and gatherings as we were there during the Guelaguetza. My research on tourism highlighted its dual impact: generating revenue while contributing to gentrification and infrastructure strain. Housing prices in Oaxaca's tourist-centric downtown soared 50% between 2010 and 2020, outpacing income growth for many residents. I am very appreciative of the scholarship funds awarded to me as this was one of the best experiences of my life and the funds allowed for a greater experience, thank you!
