- Assistant Professor Christoph Keplinger’s TEDxMileHigh talk was selected for international coverage on TED.com. He is designing a new generation of soft, agile robots inspired by a masterpiece of evolution: biological muscle.
- The NSF has awarded 32 prestigious Graduate Research Fellowships to CU Boulder students, paving the way for them to continue their innovative and impactful research on campus. The awards recognize outstanding graduate students from across the country in STEM fields.
- Assistant Professor Peter Hamlington received a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation this month for his work exploring the characteristics and behavior of highly turbulent premixed flames in engines using advanced computational simulations. He will receive $500K over five years.
- The Discovery Learning Apprenticeship Program will hold an open symposium from 2-4 p.m. on April 12 in the engineering center lobby. The event features student research on wildfire spread, virtual reality for spacecraft habitat design and biofiltration in water reuse, among many other topics.
- CU Boulder mechanical engineering alumnus Mike Maloney chooses to take risks, try new things, serve others and get things done all while having fun! He began his career as a pilot in the United States Navy and has since founded KOTA Longboards.
- The top three New Venture Challenge champions, Stride Tech, Button Huggie and Tissue Form originated in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Teams started as ‘Entrepreneurship for Social Innovation’ senior design projects, graduate design projects and as research in mechanical engineering labs.
- A new high-resolution X-ray microtomography imaging system designed by Wil Srubar, Virginia Ferguson, Mija Hubler, Robert McLeod and Stephanie Bryant will enhance research, not only in engineering, but in the fields of archaeology, geology and medicine across campus and the Rocky Mountain region.
- The 2019 CU Engineering Projects Expo will showcase hands-on engineering capstone design projects of over 130 teams on April 26. Engineering seniors and graduate students are sponsored by industry partners, CU Boulder faculty members or have developed their own entrepreneurial ideas.
- Mechanical engineering students won first, second and third place at the New Venture Challenge championships. Stride Tech, a capstone design team took home $100,000. Button Huggie, a graduate design team took home $45,000. TissueForm took home $12,500.
