Get Ready to Register

Your assigned enrollment period begins at [time] on [date]. Registration remains open through open enrollment, which begins Jan. 6, 2025.

To make registration as easy as possible, complete these tasks ahead of time:

Add your enrollment dates to your calendar.
Work to resolve any registration holds by following instructions in the hold's description.
If you haven't already, schedule an advising appointment. If you're looking to improve your cumulative GPA, discuss whether you'd benefit from retaking a course for grade replacement.
If eligible, reserve a seat in a course. Course reservation starts Monday, Oct. 28, and ends at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1.
Complete preregistration.
Search for classes and add them to your shopping cart for faster registration. Learn more about how to search for classes.

Register for Classes

Register as soon as your enrollment time begins for the best chance to get the classes, class times and/or instruction modes you want. For step-by-step instructions, see our registration pages.

If a class you want is full, add yourself to the waitlist and set up drop if enrolled to automatically drop a backup class if you're enrolled from the waitlist.

Coming Back After Some Time Away?

Even if you're not taking classes this fall, you're still considered an active student if you've been gone for fewer than two semesters plus summer (undergrads), or if you took an official leave of absence (grad students).

Welcome to the 2024–25 academic year at CU Boulder! Please keep in mind the following key dates. Deadlines occur at 11:59 p.m. Mountain Time unless otherwise noted.

These dates apply to Main Campus classes that follow the full-semester start and end dates (Aug. 26–Dec. 12, 2024). For other calendars, see our academic calendar webpage.*

Monday, Sept. 2

Labor Day holiday (no classes; university closed)

Wednesday, Sept. 4

Last day to add a class, swap a class or join a waitlist for a closed class.
Last day to be automatically enrolled from a waitlist.
Last day to pay your tuition & fee bill.

Tuesday, Sept. 10

Last day to pay your tuition & fee bill (extended deadline).

Wednesday, Sept. 11

Last day to drop a class without penalty.
Last day to withdraw from the semester without tuition charges and W grades; a $200 withdrawal fee applies.
Last day to change variable credit hours & no-credit status.

Friday, Sept. 15

Last day to enroll in or waive student health insurance coverage.

Monday, Sept. 18

Waitlists are canceled. Students still on the waitlist lose access to that class's online materials, but may be eligible to reserve a seat in the course the next time it's offered.

Friday, Nov. 1

Last day to drop a class; W grades will apply.
Last day to change pass/fail grade mode.

Monday, Nov. 25–Friday, Nov. 29

Fall break (no classes; university closed Nov. 28 & 29).

Thursday, Dec. 12

Last day of classes.
Last day to withdraw from the semester.

Saturday, Dec. 14–Wednesday, Dec. 18

Final exams.

* If you’re enrolled in any class that doesn’t meet for the full 16 weeks, it’s a special session class. Special session classes follow different deadlines than full-semester classes (view the special session calendar). To check the session and view key dates for one of your classes, go to the Your Classes card in Buff Portal. Select a class to view session information and the “Drop/Swap/Edit This Class” button for related deadlines.

Welcome to CU Boulder! To help your first semester go smoothly, please make sure you've completed the following tasks.

___ Clear Your Holds & Complete Your To-Dos

Check your holds and to-dos in Buff Portal for specific action items.

___ Submit Your Final Official Transcript(s)

Final official transcripts should be sent to the Office of Admissions directly from the issuing institution by mail or to transcripts@colorado.edu as soon as they are available. Without your final transcripts, CU won't be able to let you register or apply financial aid to future semesters.

___ Apply for and Authorize the College Opportunity Fund (In-State Undergrads Only)

The College Opportunity Fund (COF) is Colorado's way of financially supporting its in-state undergraduates. There's no limit to the number of in-state undergrads who receive it, and you never have to pay it back. If you haven't already, complete two steps to opt in: 1) submit the one-time COF application and 2) authorize the use of COF funds. Visit the COF card in Buff Portal to check your COF status, learn how to check a course's COF eligibility and contact registrar@colorado.edu with any additional questions.

___ Register with Selective Service by Sept. 28 (Males Ages 18–25 Only)

If you were assigned male at birth and are between the ages of 18 and 25, federal law requires that you complete a one-time Selective Service registration. See Register with Selective Service for more information.

___ Grant Parents Access to Education Record

Once classes begin, the university can no longer communicate with parents about your education record, including financial aid information because it’s protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Granting access is optional, but encouraged if your parent is helping you with financial aid. See FERPA Consent to Release for more information

___ Complete Any Required Loan Documents

If you accepted a Federal Direct Loan (subsidized and unsubsidized), be sure to complete the required entrance counseling and Master Promissory Note (MPN).

Thinking about taking classes this summer? Summer Session at CU Boulder has hundreds of classes available to help you earn credit toward your degree. Summer classes allow you to shorten your time to graduation and let you focus on one or two classes at a time.

Summer Session courses are offered during multiple sessions that fit your schedule and, if your summer unexpectedly frees up, registration remains open through at least the second day of the session (view session calendars).

Session Dates & Instruction Formats

This summer, classes are available in multiple instruction modes: in-person, online, remote or hybrid. You can check your class's instruction mode using the summer class schedule.

Maymester: May 13–31
Session A: June 3–July 5
Session B: July 9–August 9
Session C: June 3–July 26
Session D: June 3–August 9
Augmester: August 5–22

Friday, March 22 is the last day for undergraduate and graduate students (law students excluded) to complete the following actions for a full-semester Main Campus class:*

Drop a class: If you drop a Main Campus class after Jan. 31 but remain enrolled in the semester, you'll be required to pay 100 percent of tuition and fees (no refund), and a W grade will post to your transcript.
Change a class's grade mode from letter grade to pass/fail (or vice versa): Only student-option courses** are eligible. The last day to change a class to or from no credit (audit) was Jan. 31.

If you've satisfactorily completed a substantial amount of work for a class but are unable to complete it due to reasons beyond your control, you may request an incomplete (I) grade. This will give you additional time to complete your coursework before your instructor is required to assign your final grade. For more information, see CU Boulder's incomplete grade policy.

*If you're taking a special session Main Campus class, check the special session calendar for that session's deadlines.

**If a department designates a course as student option, it's your choice whether to take it for a letter grade or as pass/fail.

Friday, March 22 is the last day for undergraduate and graduate students drop a class or change pass/fail status for a full-semester Main Campus class.
