Unconscious biases exacerbate systemic inequities in the recruitment of students for enrichment opportunities. Working on one’s ability to meaningfully interact with people from varying backgrounds helps.

Historically minoritized students can feel intimidated by contacting faculty and may doubt their ability to succeed at research. Invite and encourage students specifically, rather than waiting for students to approach.

Use of inclusive language and images in outreach can correct misperceptions about belonging. Feature a diversity of individuals in images and be mindful of jargon and gender-coded words.

Consider selection criteria other than traditional metrics, such as GPA, test scores and prior experience. Motivation, communication skills, and other factors can be strong indicators for success.
