Intra-University Transfer (IUT) Frequently Asked Questions
IUT Application
Please try the following possible solutions:
- Find the on the general IUT webpage, located on a gray sidebar
- Access the IUT Application between the hours of 8am-5pm MT
- It is possible that you tried to access the application while the system was undergoing maintenance
- Open a different web browser to access your IUT Application
- Clear your cache and cookies in your browser settings
- View
- Log into the CU Boulder Virtual Private Network (VPN), if you are off campus
- View
If you are still unable to access the application at this point, please email IUT@colorado.edu to explore other options.
To complete the IUT Application, log into Buff Portal and then try clicking the link again. If that does not work, follow the instructions under the "What should I do if I am having trouble logging into the IUT Application?". If neither of those options work, email IUT@colorado.edu.
The IUT Application closes for a short period each spring and fall term, depending on the college/school/program. Please refer to the IUT Dates & Deadlines webpage for IUT Application open dates.
You can find your in-progress and earned credit hours if you in Buff Portal Advising.

Please email IUT@colorado.edu and specify which IUT Application you would like to cancel.
When you click the “Submit” button" there are two ways you can verify that your IUT Application was received:
- Your browser will be redirected to a confirmation landing page
- You should receive a confirmation email within 5-20 minutes to your @colorado.edu email address
If you do not see the confirmation page and/or receive a confirmation email, there may have been an error when you submitted your IUT Application. You can submit another IUT Application, and if you still do not receive a confirmation email, please email IUT@colorado.edu.
- If you are currently in a major and college/school/program that you would like to continue and you would like to add a second major/degree in a different college/school/program
- Please select the "Add" button when completing your IUT Application
- If you are currently in the Program in Exploratory Studies (PES) and you would like to be considered for admissions for more than one program, or if you would like to pursue a double degree in two different colleges/schools/programs
- Please complete two new separate IUT Applications and indicate your reason for completing multiple IUT Applications on the last page of the IUT Application
- If you are applying to multiple programs in the same term, you will need to complete a new and separate IUT Application for each college/school/program
- A double major is when you choose to pursue two majors withing the same college/school/program.
- This is not considered an Intra-University Transfer (IUT), visit the Office of the Registrar website to learn how to change, add, or drop a major/minor/certificate within the same college/school/program
- A double degree is when you choose to add a degree program involving two different CU Boulder colleges/schools/programs
- If you currently have a major you would like to keep and you want to add a second major in a different college/school/program, please complete the IUT Application and select the "Add" button on the second page of the IUT Application
- Program in Exploratory Studies (PES) students who are interested in pursuing a double degree, can submit two separate IUT "Change" Applications and indicate on the first page of both IUT Applications that they are interested in a double degree
- If you are applying to multiple programs in the same term, you will need to complete a new and separate IUT Application for each college/school/program
IUT Dates & Deadlines
You should apply for an IUT during the same semester you meet (or will meet) the IUT Requirements:
- If you meet (or will meet) the IUT Requirements by the end of the Fall term, apply by the October 1st IUT Priority Consideration Deadline for Spring Admission.
- If you meet (or will meet) the IUT Requirements by the end of the Spring term, apply by the March 1st IUT Priority Consideration Deadline for Summer Admission. You are not required to enroll in summer coursework.
- If you meet (or will meet) the IUT Requirements by the end of the Summer term, apply as soon as possible for Fall Admission. Please note Fall Admission may not be available for colleges/schools/programs with space limitations

Applying by the IUT Priority Consideration Deadline will allow your IUT Application for "On Track" and/or "Admitted" status consideration. If granted either status, you would then have access to register for restricted classes during your assigned enrollment date and time. You are strongly advised to apply by the IUT Priority Consideration Deadline for full consideration and greater course availability. However, you may continue to apply until the IUT Final Deadline for your intended college/school/program. Please see the IUT Dates & Deadlines webpage for more information.
Please refer to the IUT Priority Consideration and IUT Final Deadlines for each term. You are strongly advised to apply by the IUT Priority Consideration Deadline for full consideration and greater course availability. Please see the IUT Dates & Deadlines webpage for more information.
IUT Applications received after the IUT Priority Consideration Deadline are considered on a space-available basis until the IUT Final Application Deadline. IUT Applications received after the IUT Final Application Deadline are processed for the following term. Please see the IUT Dates & Deadlines webpage for more information.
- If you have completed (or will complete) your IUT requirements by the end of the Spring semester, then you should apply by the March 1st IUT Priority Consideration Deadline for summer admission
- If you are "On Track" and/or "Admitted", starting in your intended college/school/program in the summer will give you increased access to restricted fall courses (when available)
- Acceptance to the summer term does not require you to take summer classes

The CU Boulder Census deadline is the IUT Final Deadline to submit an IUT Drop Application. Applications submitted after 12pm (noon) MT on Census will be considered for the following semester.

IUT Application Status
Please see the section on the IUT webpage titled, “Understand the IUT Admissions Process” for IUT Application Status definitions. You should also refer to the IUT webpage of the college/school/program where you intend to apply for specific information regarding IUT Requirements.

It is recommended that you schedule an appointment with your current academic advisor to adjust your course schedule for the following semester.
Colleges/schools/programs that do not offer "On Track" status will consider IUT Applications submitted at the IUT Priority Consideration Deadlines for "Admitted" or "Deferred" status. After the IUT Priority Consideration Deadline, colleges/schools/programs accept IUT Applications until the IUT Final Application Deadline, on a space-available basis.
Summer & Fall IUT Applications
- The IUT Application term is “Summer”, because if you apply by the IUT Priority Consideration Deadline and your IUT Application is “Accepted” or “On Track,” you can register for Summer courses in March and/or Fall courses in April during your assigned registration appointment. However, you are not required to enroll in summer coursework
- There is not a Priority Consideration Deadline for the Fall IUT Admissions Cycle, so if the IUT Application term is “Fall”, you will have less access to courses and your intended IUT college/school/program may be full if you wait to apply for an IUT
- If you meet (or will meet) your IUT Requirements by the end of the spring term, you should apply by the March 1st Priority Consideration Deadline for Summer Admission
- If you apply for summer term by March 1st and meet “On Track” or “Admitted” IUT Application status, you:
- Can register for summer session courses in March and/or fall semester courses in April during your assigned registration appointment
- Will have access to your new academic advisor assignment in Buff Portal Advising earlier
- Will receive priority consideration for colleges/schools/programs with limited space availability
- The IUT Application term is “Summer”, because if you apply by the IUT Priority Consideration Deadline and your IUT Application is “Accepted” or “On Track,” you can register for Summer courses in March and/or Fall courses in April during your assigned registration appointment. However, you are not required to enroll in summer coursework
- There is not a Priority Consideration Deadline for the Fall IUT Admissions Cycle, so if the IUT Application term is “Fall”, you will have less access to courses and your intended IUT college/school/program may be full if you wait to apply for an IUT
No, you are not required to take summer courses.
Major Changes (Within the Same College/School/Program)
The Intra-University Transfer (IUT) Application is only for students wishing to change, add, or drop a major in two different colleges/schools/programs. If you would like to change, add, or drop a major, minor, or certificate within your current college/school/program, please meet with your current academic advisor.

The IUT Application is only used to change, add, or drop one major at time for each college school or program:
- To pursue a double major in your intended college/school/program, choose one of your intended majors for the IUT Application
- If you are admitted to your intended college/school/program, you can then work with your assigned academic advisor to declare an additional major
- Changing or adding a major in the same college/school/program is not considered an Intra-University Transfer (IUT), visit the Office of the Registrar website to learn how to change, add, or drop a major/minor/certificate within the same college/school/program
IUT Considerations
Timelines to graduation can vary greatly from student to student, depending on factors such as:
- Transfer credit
- Course load
- Academic performance
- Course sequencing
- Course availability
- Experiential learning opportunities (study abroad)
- Additional majors or minors
The following projections should be viewed as general estimates and not a set timeline. You should meet with your assigned academic advisor to determine your timeline to graduation based on your individual academic record.
Depends on the major and the courses already completed, but most A&S majors can be completed in an additional 3-6 semesters (1.5-3 years) after completing an IUT.
- CEAS graduation completion depends on the major and whether students take available courses to make degree progress while completing IUT Requirements
- Most CEAS majors usually take an additional 6 semesters (3 years) after after completing an IUT
- Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering can take an additional 8 semesters (4 years) after completing an IUT
Depending on your progress upon completing an IUT into CMCI:
- Students usually need an additional 4-5 semesters (2-2.5 years) for the Communication, Journalism, Media Studies and Strategic Communication majors
- Students transferring into Information Science or Media Production may need an additonal 5-6 semesters (2.5-3 years) to complete their degree
- Information Science offers a 5-year Bachelor’s of Science and Master’s of Science degree
- All students in CMCI must complete a Secondary Area of Study outside of their major
- This can be a minor, certificate, double major or double degree
- Degree completion timelines for the College of Music depend upon your audition and music theory placement exams, among other factors
- Once admitted to the College of Music, IUT students will meet with the College of Music advisor to map out their individual degree plan
Depending on your progress upon completing an IUT, most business majors require an additional 4-5 semesters to complete their degree in the Leeds School of Business.
Completion of the ENVD Core Curriculum usually takes an additional 7 semesters, which may include a summer term depending on when your ENVD IUT is processed.
- Students cannot graduate with a degree in PES and are required to complete an Intra-University Transfer (IUT) to a new college/school/program
- PES students with 30 credits or less, have four semesters to complete an IUT
- PES students with more than 30 credits, have three semesters to complete an IUT
Depending on progress upon completing an IUT into the School of Education:
- Teacher licensure programs (Elementary Education and Middle and High School Teaching) will usually take a minimum of an additional four sequential fall/spring semesters beginning in a fall semester
- This timeline will be longer if licensure requirements outside of the School of Education have not already been completed
- Students who apply after June 1 cannot be placed for professional fieldwork beginning in the fall and will take a minimum of three years to complete a licensure program
- Leadership & Community Engagement major and Education Studies majors usually take an additional 3-4 semesters
When you change, add, or drop a college/school/program your tuition bill and financial aid may change if the rates for your new college/school/program are different from your current college/school/program. It is recommended that you and that you and/or scholarship donor (if applicable).
Minors and certificates are automatically kept in your degree plan during the IUT process. The only exception is if your minor is incompatible with your major in your new college/school/program. If you are unsure whether your minor has specific eligibility requirements, check with an academic advisor for the minor or .

Please be aware that if you select an IUT "Change", all majors in your college will be dropped. In order to keep one of your majors in your current college/school/program and then switch the other, you will need to drop the major you do not want through your college/school/program's major drop process and then add your new major in the college where you would like to apply for an Intra-University Transfer (IUT).  IUT Eligibility
- Incoming first-year and transfer students should complete a major change request form in their CU Boulder Admissions application, before their first day of classes at CU Boulder
- Incoming first-year and transfer students cannot access the Intra-University Transfer (IUT) Application until after their first day of classes at CU Boulder

- If you are not eligible for "On Track" status, but you will meet the IUT requirements by the end of the term, you can still apply by the IUT Priority Consideration Deadline or the IUT Final Deadline
- If you will not meet the IUT Requirements by the end of the term, please wait to apply during the term you have met (or will meet) the “On Track” and/or IUT Requirements for your intended college/school/program
