Disclosing Specific Information
In specific situations, federal law may authorize the release of FERPA-protected information without the student's authorization.
Class Recordings
If a recording includes a student in class and the student is identifiable either by voice or image, then the recording is considered a part of the student’s educational record and is protected by federal law.
Concerns for Student Behavior, Health & Safety
Federal law allows university faculty or staff to assist when students are perceived to be behaving oddly; generate concerns about the safety of the student or others; or are in a health or safety emergency.
Disciplinary Information
Federal law allows certain individuals to be notified of a disciplinary case and/or given access to the student's disciplinary information under specific circumstances.
Student Recommendations
Federal law limits the type of information you're allowed to disclose in a student recommendation based on the nature of the recipient and whether the student has provided written consent.
