Course Substitutions

Please consult with your academic advisor before enrolling in a substitute course or with questions about pacing. While some substitutes are almost identical to the MCEN version, others are only appropriate for students pursuing a specific minor or option track, based on requisites.

Some of the courses listed below may be restricted to students in that major. To request enrollment in a course that's restricted, you may need to submit a course request form.

  • APPM 2360 Linear Algebra & Differential Equations: MATH 2130+3430 
    • In addition to satisfying APPM 2360, MATH 2130+3430 will also satisfy the Math/Science Foundations requirement.
  • MCEN 1030 Intro to Engineering Computing: CSCI 1300, ECEN 1310, ASEN 1320, CSCI 1320 (last offered spring 2020)
    • CHEN 1310 + APPM 2460 is also pre-approved to satisfy CSCI 1300, for students who originally took CHEN 1310 as a BMEN/CHEN/CBEN/EVEN major. Submission of a formal petition is required.
    • Students may want to review the  for more guidance on course selection to satisfy their computing requirement
  • GEEN 1400 Engineering Projects: ASEN 1400, ASEN 1403, COEN 1400, ECEN 1400, GEEN 1410, GEEN 2400 (sophomores or juniors), GEEN 3400 (juniors or seniors)
  • MCEN 1024 Chemistry for Energy and Materials Science: CHEM 1113, CHEN 1201, CHEN 1211, CHEM 1400
  • MCEN 1025 Computer-Aided Design & Fabrication
    • ​BMEN 1025 is approved to satisfy MCEN 1025 only for students who originally took BMEN 1025 as a BMEN major. Submission of a formal petition is required.
  • MCEN 2023 Statics & Structures: GEEN 2851, CVEN 2121, ASEN 2001/2701/2401
  • MCEN 2024 Materials Science: GEEN 3024, ASEN 1022
  • MCEN 2043 Dynamics: CVEN 3111, PHYS 3210, ASEN 2003/2703/2403
  • MCEN 2063 Mechanics of Solids: CVEN 3161, ASEN 3401 (to be offered starting Fall 2024)
  • MCEN 3012 Thermodynamics: GEEN 3852, AREN 2110, EVEN 3012, ASEN 2402 (to be offered starting Fall 2024)
    • ASEN 2702 Intro to Thermodynamics and Aerodynamics is not an approved substitution to satisfy MCEN 3012
  • MCEN 3017 Circuits & Electronics: ECEN 3010, GEEN 3010, ECEN 2250+2260+2270, ASEN 3503
    • In addition to satisfying MCEN 3017, ECEN 2250+2260+2270 will also satisfy the Math/Science Foundations requirement.
  • MCEN 3021 Fluid Mechanics: AREN 2120, CHEN 3200, CVEN 3313
  • MCEN 3022 Heat Transfer: CHEN 3210, ASEN 3402
  • MCEN 3030 Computational Methods: APPM 4600, APPM 4650 (course number discontinued as of Fall 2022), CSCI 3656, ASEN 3502 (to be offered starting Fall 2024)
    • ASEN 2012 Experimental and Computational Methods in Aerospace Engineering Sciences is not an approved substitution to satisfy MCEN 3030
  • MCEN 3047 Data Analysis and Experimental Methods: GEEN 3853
  • MCEN 4043 System Dynamics: ECEN 3300 + ECEN/MCEN 4138
    • Completing both ECEN 3300 and ECEN/MCEN 4138 satisfies both the MCEN 4043 requirement plus 3 credits toward an ME or General Technical Elective.
